One of the biggest problems with diagnosing mental disorders is the lack of awareness about the disorders and also the stigma attached with them. Many people suffer in silence also because disorders like depression have no easily recognizable symptoms. Health Minister J P Nadda on Tuesday said that more than six percent of the total Indian population is suffering from some or the other mental disorder such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.

In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, the Health Minister quoted the National Commission on Macroeconomic and Health, 2005 and said that in that year 10-20 million people which is approximately 2% of the population, suffered from severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. Also, nearly 50 million people, that is 5% of the population suffered from common mental disorders such as depression and anxiety which together amounts around 6.5 %of the population.
