6 expert tips to maintain weight after weight loss

According to the report, 'Innovative Research to Improve Maintenance of Weight Loss' will be appear in the January 2015 issue of the journal 'Obesity,' those who have lost weight face this challenge because of different genetic, epigenetic and neuro-hormones in the bodies. Here are some tips offered by group of obesity experts led by Paul MacLean, PhD, and Rena Wing, PhD at National Institutes of Health Working Group:

  • Because weight gain after significant weight loss is mainly due to genetics, you should have a personalized weight-maintenance plan
  • Use pharmacological strategies, if needed, to counter the physiological changes that occur after weight loss, which require adjustments to the drug development process.
  • Don't divert from your target. Just because you have lost weight doesn't mean you can skip the gym or exercise routine. Improve adherence to physical activity programs
  • In order to get used to or stick to a low calorie, healthy diet, eat foods engineered to maximize palatability and satiation
  • Control impulsive eating and eating food perceived for reward value

Dr. Wing added that development of more effective approaches to weight-loss maintenance requires the integration of physiological and behavioral perspectives and a more concerted collaboration between basic and clinical researchers. Dr. MacLean, co-chairman of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) working group said that there are many differences in individuals ranging from genetic to behavioral that lead some to do well on one approach, whereas others do not.
