32 die in South Korea due to MERS

South Korea on Sunday reported one more death, due MERS, taking the toll to 32.

MERS is in the international spotlight again as South Korea faces the largest MERS outbreak outside the Middle East. It is a respiratory diseses that is caused by a type of virus belonging to the coronavirus family. South Korea on Sunday reported one more death, due to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), taking the toll to 32, the health ministry said.

The total number of people infected remained unchanged at 182 since Saturday, Xinhua reported, citing the ministry of health and welfare. With the latest death, the fatality rate has risen to 17.6 percent. The country's MERS outbreak has abated recently as only one case was discovered on Saturday. The number of those quarantined increased from 2,467 on Saturday to 2,562 on Sunday.

The following individuals are at a greater risk of infection:

  • Those with diabetes
  • Those having cancer
  • Those suffering from chronic lung, heart and kidney disease.
  • Individuals with a weakened immune system
