Mental health of a person suffering from diabetes both Type 1 and Type 2 is always undermined and ignored. Mental health of a person with diabetes plays a very important role while dealing with this disease. It is said that a person dealing with diabetes must be provided with better mental health support from friends, family and society. This result concluded from a survey that was conducted by Diabetes UK, says that a whopping three out of five diabetics suffer from emotional and mental health difficulties. And these problems are directly linked to their illness. Out of the 8,500 people from different backgrounds, age group and ethnicities, 64 percent say they often feel low because of their diabetes. Also, 33 percent said diabetes interrupts them from doing things they wanted to do. Meanwhile, 30 percent said they definitely felt in control of their diabetes. This data is beyond sad and should be addressed asap. However, here are a few things you MUST not say to a person with Diabetes to make them feel bad about their illness:
1. 'Don't eat chocolates, you have diabetes'- A person with diabetes needs no reminder about his/her illness. And if you want to tell someone who is being really careless about diabetes, find a nice way to put it.
2. 'Don't donate blood, you are a diabetic'- Donating blood makes you feel good as you have the feeling of doing a good deed. However, on a serious note, can diabetics donate blood? Yes, they can, as long as they manage healthy blood sugar levels.
3. 'You should do something about your diabetes': You really think the person isn't doing anything? Don't make it more difficult for her/him.
4. 'Why are you keep going to the loo so many times?': If you don't know the symptoms of diabetes Look up for it on the internet. Peeing frequently is a symptom of diabetes. There is nothing he/she can do about it.
5. 'Let's not go out to eat, you won't be able to eat anything and it doesn't have a washroom.': This is the most savage thing you can say. I know a diabetic shouldn't eat junk food. But this will make him/her very upset and make them feel like a person with a disability (Even they don't deserve to feel that way).
