A, 28-year-old woman, who delivered a baby at Ooty's Sait's Government Maternity Hospital on Sunday, died due to post-delivery complications at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Wednesday.
Soon after giving birth, Revathi Saravanan started bleeding and was transferred to Udhagamandalam Government Hospital. She was on ventilator in a critical condition for two days after and lost her life while being shifted to the hospital. Reportedly, this is the 5th maternal death due to post-delivery complications that took place at Sait's Government Maternity Hospital. Parents of the victim and 75 members of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) protested and refused to accept her dead body. 'We want to know the reason for my daughter's death and people responsible for it,' said Revathi's mother Meenakshi Mani. 'We want the Nilgiris district collector and the team of doctors, including the gyneacologists who treated my wife, to come here and give us a proper explanation for her death,' said Revathi's husband T Saravanan. The reports confirmed blood loss due to contracted uterus as the cause of death. The death occurred on a day when Tamil Nadu Health Minister Vijaya Bhaskar reviewed the situation at the Sait Memorial Hospital, where the five women developed post-delivery complications. The minister announced infrastructure measures, including an Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. The hospital will have a lift at a cost of Rs 45 lakh. Two new ventilators will also be allotted to the hospital here and another in Coonoor. Bhaskar confirmed that the government has taken steps to appoint 1,727 MBBS doctors and 2,172 BDS doctors across the state next month. (Read: Poverty, child & maternal deaths still high in India: UN)
The protestor have also demanded compensation for the family. 'We will not accept the body till the family is awarded an adequate compensation. We want the government to take responsibility for this,' said TMMK Coimbatore district president Kabeer Ahmed.
