Consumer goods maker Hindustan Unilever (HUL) has launched a 21 day hand hygiene awareness campaign to celebrate Global Handwashing Day (GHD) on October 15. The initiative is part of Memorandum of Understanding between Government of Madhya Pradesh, UNICEF and HUL. Aiming to reach out to around 600,000 school children, the campaign will promote hand washing with soap in 5500 primary and middles schools in district Guna, Shivpuri and Tikamgarh.
'All stakeholders, including the public, have a role to play in helping spread the hand washing message. Lifebuoy is asking the people of India to support the cause by pledging to 'help a child reach its fifth birthday' through hand washing with soap. For every pledge we will teach the lifesaving habit to one more child through our hand washing behaviour change programmes,' said Nitin Paranjpe, CEO, HUL.
Washing hand with soap is one of the most cost-effective methods to prevent diarrhoeal-related deaths and disease, said the company in a release. Diarrhoea and pneumonia claim more than two million lives each year. In India, 609,000 children under the age of five fall prey to it every year.
