That CT scan your doctor may have asked you to do may not actually be necessary at all. This is revealed by a study in the US which states that more than 20% radiological examinations carried out are unnecessary and should be avoided. Although the benefits of these scans far outweigh the risks, they should not be carried out on a whim, it added.
Dr Gaurav Malhotra, a researcher and doctor at the radiation medicine centre of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), said radiation is a boon for medical purposes but should be used with a valid reason.
'The study shows that it is because of the ignorance of physicians that people get these scans done without a valid reason or to clear doubts. It's understood when a scan needs to be done before an operation but many a times a CT scan is carried out where an ultrasound would be sufficient,' he said.
Dr Malhotra suggests these scans should take place under tight research protocols, rigorous ethical clearances and supervision of knowledgeable radiologists with no commercial interests.
