Almost four weeks after the revelation of use of bicycle pumps in sterilisation surgeries at a community health centre (CHC) in Angul district in Odisha, the government suspended two medical officers linked to the case. (Read: Why bicycle pumps were used during sterilisation?)
Sachin Ramchandra Jadhav, district collector of Angul, said the administration called for the suspension after a preliminary inquiry report released following a detailed investigation. The Odisha Human Rights Commission sought the detailed report from the state health and family welfare department and the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Angul within four weeks.
Shankarlal Agarwal, additional district medical officer of Angul and Banarpal CHC in-charge Deepak Garnaik were suspended over the incident. Mahesh Prasad Rout, the surgeon who used the bicycle pump had been de-empanelled and notice served on him. Reportedly, the doctor used the pumps to inflate abdomen of women in 56 sterilisation surgeries. After immediate enquiry, Rout revealed that use of such pumps in sterilisation surgeries is quite common in places where sophisticated equipments are not available to proceed with surgeries. Following this incident, the Odisha government banned sterilisation camps in the state and ordered such surgeries to be established in proper health centres equipped with all the facilities necessary for sterilisation surgeries.
