lungsA team of doctors from the Civil Hospital carried out a rare laser ablation surgery on two children, who suffered from partial lung collapse. The children suffered bronchial stenosis, a condition in which the lungs gather fibrous material and stop functioning after the respiratory tract gets blocked either due to trauma or the presence of a foreign body.

In the first case, the 11-year-old child, who was referred from Rajasthan, was found to be suffering from constant cough and cold.

'Medical examination revealed that one of his lungs had collapsed because the bronchus was blocked by mass of soft tissue. Once we cleared it with laser, we found that a betel nut was stuck in the tract. This was what was blocking the air from going into one of the lungs. As the passage and the lung were cleared, the patient began to breathe fully and soon the lung returned to its normal working capacity,' said Dr Rakesh Joshi, head of the department, pediatric surgery, Civil Hospital.

Dr Rajesh Vishwakarma, head of the ENT department of Civil Hospital, said, that such cases are rarely found and few end up as success. He said that usually cases of bronchial stenosis are usually found in cases in which the patient suffers extreme trauma. He said that a similar operation was carried out on a 7-year-old, who had been a victim of road accident. (Read: Rare lung transplant saves the life of 34 year old)

'He was admitted to the trauma ward, treated and sent home. He returned two months later. During the follow up, he complained of severe respiratory distress,' said Dr Vishwakarma. He said that the child had his respiratory tract blocked and as a result, one of his lungs was not working.

'Thankfully, he too was restored using the same surgery,' said Dr Vishwakarma. Dr MM Prabhakar, superintendent of civil hospital said that it was the only government hospital in the state to have the state-of-the-art technology for such surgery.
