Generally, the weight of the goitre varies between 10-25g and depends upon the age, gender and physiological status of the patient.

The patient, Noorjahan hails from Uttar Pradesh and had approached AIIMS with a large lump in the neck in May and was the surgery was performed on June 8. The doctors carried out a series of tests including X-ray, CT scan, thyroid functioning tests after which they decided on a surgery which took place on June 8 -- but with a different technique.

'Noorjahan was suffering from the problem for the past 20 years. She did not have any major problem in eating, breathing and was without any pain but it was putting pressure on nearby organs, causing heaviness and breathing problems,' said Pratyusha Priyadarshini, senior resident doctor at the AIIMS' surgery department. Dr S Chumber, professor, department of surgery, AIIMS informed that it was rather a challenging surgery to remove a goitre as large as this. They had to modify the their surgical techniques as the oesophagus, a recurrent laryngeal nerve of both sides and the main vessels of the neck were close to the thyroid.

He further added that to prevent the trachea from damaging, they conducted a temporary tracheotomy, wherein they inserted a tube in the windpipe to assist her breathing. Read: Thyroid - facts you need to know

The surgery took around six hours to complete and she was under observation until she recovered completely.
