Nineteen workers fell ill following a chemical leak at Grasim Industries, a subsidiary of the Aditya Birla Group, in Binaga, Karwar, on Saturday. The incident, caused by a chlorine gas leak from the company's SCL plant, led to symptoms such as breathing difficulties, coughing, and sore throats among the workers, according to officials familiar with the situation on Sunday.
Among the affected workers, eight are local residents, while 11 are from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Fourteen workers were promptly hospitalized at the Karwar District Government Hospital, and five received treatment at the company's on-site clinic. Officials stated that all the workers are now in stable condition.
District health officer Ramesh Rao said to media that 14 individuals among the 19 were treated at the Karwar District hospital and the other five received treatment at the company clinic. The district health officer reportedly visited the factory premises right after the incident. As per news reports, no workers at the factory suffered serious health problems. All 19 people who were taken ill will be discharged soon.
The plant has been instructed to halt operations and workers have been instructed to leave the premises by 7:30 pm.
