We reported about the Dharavi incident yesterday. In another incident in Ghatkopar (Mumbai), 12 patients including two children were admitted with symptoms similar to the patients in the Dharavi incident which included headache, nausea and giddiness. Around 11 PM last night, a 13 year old boy died after being critical for a few hours.
The Dharavi kids might have used dyes from a neighbourhood leather tannery in Dharavi thinking they are Holi colours.Dharavi Police has registered an FIT against unknown people regarding this case. They have also asked the forensic department to collect colour samples.
Expert doctors are suspecting a chemical like benzene to be causing the symptoms that they are finding with these patients. These symptoms are caused by the chemical getting into the body through the skin and causing deprivation of oxygen. The treatment includes injection of a compound called methylene blue which increases the oxygen carrying capacity of hemoglobin.
Meanwhile, the State Government has set up a five member committee which will submit its report about these incidents within two weeks.
