As the country celebrated its 69th Independence day, a few 100 kids from Bihar who also participated in the celebrations paid a rather grim price. On Saturday morning, nearly 100 kids in Bihar's Darbhanga district fell ill after consuming the Independence day sweets. The incident took place in Ranipur village in Darbhanga which is about 200 km from Patna. The sweets were distributed by the village head to mark the Independence day, but soon after consuming it children fell ill, reported indiatoday.intoday.in
The children complained of uneasiness after eating sweets which was followed by vomiting and were hospitalised at the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital. Out of the 100, 20 children rare said to be critical.
Such accidents are not new in Bihar. The mid-day-meal scheme which aims at luring children to school by providing one meal has also proved to be dangerous to children's health. Recently, around 80 children had taken ill after eating the mid-day meal at two government schools in Bihar. The condition of the children improved after being hospitalised. In 2013, 23 students had lost their lives due to food poisoning after a mid-day meal in Saran district.
These incidents are taken very lightly and the district administration do very little to avert such a mishap. The mid-day meal scheme provides food to 16 million children in 72,000 schools in Bihar alone. If such incidents continue to happen, the goal of the mid-day meal at schools gets nullified!
