100 doctors witness live streaming of bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery is a surgery that is performed on obese people. The surgery removes a portion of their stomach, which in turn reduces food intake and lead to weight loss.

100 doctors from different hospitals witnessed a bariatric surgery performed live at Apollo Hospital, Perungudi in Chennnai on Saturday. The live streaming of the operation was done so that other doctors could benefit from the experience as part of their medical education. The operation performed by Prem Kumar Balachandran was streamed using Reliance Jio s Jionet high-speed Wi-Fi internet service.

Ability to do live-streaming of surgical procedure is an essential requirement for medical training and we believe that harnessing technology in this way will eventually become a core component of medical education system, Sanjay Mashruwala, managing director, Reliance Jio was quoted as saying in a statement.
