‘50 million diabetics in India’

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimation, nearly 200 million people all over the world suffer from diabetes. The International Diabetes Federation believes there are nearly 50 million diabetics in India. There is also a rise of diabetes-related complications and doctors feel there’s an urgent need increase awareness. Also Read - Children born to mothers who had diabetes during pregnancy may age faster



People with diabetes have foot problems which can get serious very fast. Long standing diabetes increases the risk of developing complications like diabetic neuropathy and diabetic foot.  The disease can also cause difficulties during pregnancy such as a miscarriage or a baby born with birth defects.  Also Read - Researchers develop insulin-producing cells for diabetes

Gestational diabetes also called glucose intolerance by some, is a temporary form of the disease during pregnancy in which the body produces inadequate amounts of insulin to deal with sugar. Obesity or a history of abortions increases the risk of the disease in pregnant women. Like diabetes, it can be treated with diet modifications and lifestyle changes.
