When your stomach isn't doing great, it doesn't feel amazing does it? Indigestion is a common problem that makes us feel full even when we haven't eaten. It goes without saying that it has an impact on our bodies. When the acid in your stomach runs back into your oesophagus, it causes indigestion. It can also be caused by an irritated stomach that produces irritation. If not treated properly, it can cause severe problems such as fullness, pain, heaviness, and even nausea. While the best solution may seem like an over-the-counter medicine, but sometimes home remedies can also calm your stomach if the pain is not so severe. One home remedy that can help with digestive problems is basil or tulsi.
Ocimum basilicum or basil is grown in kitchens or gardens. The word "basil" comes from the ancient Greek "basilikhon" which means "royal". It is one of the oldest herbs known to mankind, and its medicinal and healthy benefits have long been prized knowledge around the globe. Holy basil is prized for its powerful medicinal and therapeutic capabilities closer to home. Basil leaves can be found in a wide range of dishes. The culinary herb is supposed to preserve and enhance the characteristics of the dish, in addition to its flavour. It contains many vitamins and minerals. It is also a rich source of vitamin A, C, E, K and omega-3 components. It also contains minerals including copper, calcium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc and potassium.
Ms Pavithra N Raj, Chief Dietician, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, Yeshwanthpur says, "Basil contains many vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants such as lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin." She further elaborates that basil leaves contain "carminatives (also known as aromatic digestive tonics or aromatic bitters), which helps relieve symptoms of indigestion, heartburn, nausea and excessive gas."
Ms Pavithra explains that basil leaves "soothes the inflamed oesophagus and stomach lining caused by excessive stomach acid. The anti-ulcer properties of basil leaves reduce the effect of gastric acids and curb gas production. Basil is a gas-relieving herb that may be helpful in calming an upset stomach."
