Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterised by complete breakdown of cognitive functioning and emotional response. Patients have trouble discerning reality from fantasy. The most common symptoms include hallucinations, paranoia, delusions, disorganised speech and thought processes. Though the causes for the disorder are yet to be known, there is a strong genetic link and various studies suggest that low oxygen levels in the brain might be responsible. Other environmental factors like smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, hallucinatory drugs, metal poisoning and nutritional imbalance are also known to play a part. The line of treatments include anti-psychotic drugs, cognitive behavioural therapy and institutionalisation.
