Neonatal mortality refers to the death of an infant in the first 28 days. It s a good indicator of maternal and children s health. In most developing countries nearly half of all mothers and new born infants do not receive skilled care during and immediately after birth which results in high maternal and neonatal mortality. The most common causes are dehydration from diarrhoea, pneumonia, malnutrition, malaria, infection and STDs. In 2008, about 37 out of every 1000 Indian children died in the first 28 days. Despite the numbers going down, it s still ten times higher than the rates in developed countries.
