HDL refers to High Density Lipoproteins and is often called good cholesterol . In a healthy individual 30% of the cholesterol should be HDLs. Good cholesterols are good because they help get rid of excess cholesterol by transporting them from the blood vessels to the liver for excretion. Bad cholesterols on the other hand deposit more cholesterol in the blood causing plaques, which results in issues like high BP, chest pain, heart diseases, etc. One can maintain their HDL level by eating right, avoiding alcohol and smoking and exercising.
