A bronchodilator is a substance that opens the airway passages by relaxing the muscles and dilating them. They increase airflow to the lungs. Endogenous bronchodilators are present naturally within the body. Bronchodilator medications are used for the treating breathing difficulties seen in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc. They are either short-acting or long-acting. Short-acting medications are used for quick relief from airway constriction. To control and prevent symptoms long-acting bronchodilators are used. 2-agonist, anticholinergic and theophylline are the three types of bronchodilators.
