An allergy refers to hypersensitivity of the immune system to various substances (allergens) in the environment. What sets allergies apart from general aversion is the over-activation of white blood cells (cells that fight infections). During an allergy, the white blood cells overtly react to external substances and trigger the body s immune system. These reactions can range from mildly uncomfortable to life threatening.
