Unlike pathogenic bacteria, which can cause illness, probiotics contribute to a harmonious balance within the gut microbiota. Common strains of probiotics include Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which are frequently found in fermented foods and dietary supplements.

A healthy gut microbiota is characterized by diversity and balance among its microbial inhabitants. Probiotics sustain this equilibrium by promoting beneficial bacteria growth and inhibiting harmful microbe proliferation. They also contribute to the integrity of the gut lining, preventing the penetration of pathogens and toxins into the bloodstream. Antibiotics, while essential for treating bacterial infections, can have unintended consequences for the gut microbiota. These medications not only target pathogenic bacteria but also impact the beneficial microbes, leading to a disruption in the delicate balance of the gut microbiota. This disturbance, known as dysbiosis, can result in various gastrointestinal issues and compromise the immune system. Probiotics offer a promising solution to mitigate the adverse effects of antibiotics on the gut.

  1. Restoring Microbial Diversity: Probiotics can help restore microbial diversity in the gut after antibiotics. By reintroducing beneficial bacteria, probiotics aid in the recovery of the gut microbiota, preventing the overgrowth of harmful bacteria that can lead to persistent digestive issues.
  2. Preventing Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea (AAD): Antibiotic use frequently causes a common side effect known as antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.
