A Hollywood smile with sparkling white teeth. That is what many people want. But teeth can only be made really whiter through bleaching. And that only works with chemicals.

Whiter teeth only with chemicals

If you want whiter teeth, you can't avoid bleaching agents. However, these are not included in the whitening toothpastes available in all countries.

They work with cleaning agents that make the teeth cleaner but not whiter, says toothpaste and dental hygiene experts.

The natural color of our teeth is genetically determined some have lighter teeth, some have darker teeth what we would call yellow teeth.

The color of the tooth is determined by the dentin, the tooth bone. This shines through the relatively transparent enamel. In order to make this dentin lighter, bleaching agent must be used, i.e. hydrogen peroxide. The process of bleaching the teeth is called bleaching.

That's why we need to talk about it:

Bleaching has side effects

Bleaching agents contain chemicals. Side effects may occur. Some dental practices like Vera Smile offer professional teeth whitening sessions. In combination with high-energy laser or UV light, teeth can actually be whitened. When used properly, there are hardly any side effects.

"In practice, one or more vital teeth can be bleached with a high concentration of active ingredients, that is, with 38 percent hydrogen peroxide or 35 percent carbamide peroxide (hydrogen peroxide with urea)," says a dentist and expert in bleaching.

What Scientific Studies say

However, a US study shows that applications containing at least 35 percent hydrogen peroxide almost always lead to hypersensitivity of the teeth and tooth necks.

According to this study, tooth sensitivity usually occurs at the time of treatment and can last for several days. This is why patients are often advised to take a painkiller immediately after bleaching. The tooth is irritated from the inside; bleaching can therefore, according to the study, cause the tooth enamel to become softer - and the tooth to become more sensitive.

Gum irritation can begin within a day after treatment - this gum irritation can also last for several days. In vitro studies have reported additional risks, such as tooth erosion or even the degradation of tooth minerals.

While toothpastes in most countries only contain cleaning agents, toothpastes with up to 18 percent bleaching agent (hydrogen peroxide) are also available in the United States. Such pastes can very easily be misused, says a dentist.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, toothpastes that contain more baking soda are more effective at removing stains from the tooth surface.

Some studies have shown that cleaning your mouth with coconut oil helps whiten teeth because this oil contains lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties. Rinsing your mouth with coconut oil for 15 to 20 minutes can effectively whiten your teeth.

According to a study published in the journal Natural Science, Biology and Medicine, the texture of apples and carrots may help remove stains from teeth.

Try to accept your natural tooth color!

Darker teeth can be just as healthy as snow-white Hollywood teeth. It's purely aesthetic, so it's all about appearance.

Of course, it is important to have good dental hygiene. Experts recommend brushing several times a day and also using dental floss and mouthwash. A professional teeth cleaning can also be helpful in removing tartar or plaque.

If you want whiter teeth, you should contact your dentist. It may be possible to bleach your teeth at home, for example with a splint, using a much lower dosage than in the office (around ten percent carbamide peroxide).

Bleaching only for healthy teeth

If the tooth reacts to cold or becomes sensitive, the treatment should be stopped immediately. The dentist must also check the teeth for caries, the smallest cracks in the enamel, defective filling edges or exposed tooth necks. Only those with healthy teeth and intact gums should bleach. Otherwise, the active ingredients can penetrate into the interior of the tooth and cause inflammation.

It is therefore important that the dentist checks the teeth before any treatment and provides a lot of information this also includes clearly stating possible side effects.

Bleaching makes teeth whiter for up to three years depending on your dental hygiene. The duration is affected by deposits of coffee, nicotine or red wine.
