Meril’s Made-in-India MyClip Enables Pune’s First Successful TEER Procedure

Hardas Heart Care has inaugurated a new era in cardiac care in Maharashtra by successfully treating a 64-year-old patient suffering from severe Mitral Regurgitation (MR) with India's first indigenously developed Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) system: MyClip developed by the Indian medtech company, Meril Life Sciences.

Mr. Bapu Ingale, who became severely breathless, his feet swelled up, and it became difficult for him to carry on with his daily activities from worsening health over two years, was discharged fine from Hardas Heart Care, Pune, after treatment using India's first Made In India developed Mitral Clip device (MyClip) the first procedure in the state of Maharashtra done by Dr. Suhas Hardas.

Diagnosed with Severe Mitral Regurgitation (MR), over time his symptoms worsened, as blood leaked backwards into the heart instead of being pumped out to the body.

Despite years of medical therapy, his condition continued to worsen, prompting consideration of advanced interventions.

A traditional treatment such as open-heart surgery or heart transplant was deemed high risk and inappropriate considering his age; hence the doctors invested in an interventional percutaneous Mitral Valve Repair using the MyClip TEER system, which presents both safety and effectiveness.

The lead operator was Dr. Suhas Hardas, Chief Interventional Cardiologist at Hardas Heart Care, who also performed the first successful TEER procedure with MyClip in Pune.

Explaining the case, senior interventional cardiologist Dr. Suhas Hardas said, "Because patients undergo severe mitral regurgitation with high surgical risk mostly because of age, hypertension, and diabetes, the other factors are obesity, frailty, co-existing problems in the kidney, lung, and liver. If untreated, MR has so devastating outcomes that more than 50 percent might die; also, one-year mortality can go as high as 57 percent. For such a patient, here is a life-saving option of non-surgical MyClip procedure."

The minimally invasive TEER procedure was performed through a small puncture made on the thigh and lasted an hour.

The patients were fine and discharged within days. Mr. Bapu Ingale leveled up to his normal daily activities and felt a marked improvement in his energy level and breathing.

Approximately 1.5 million Indians are beset with severe mitral regurgitation, and nearly 1.2 million of these cases are due to heart failure or previous heart attacks. Andmore especially, thousands of old patients in Maharashtra-facing similar problems against a backdrop of 130 million-in their treatment do not improve with medical therapy and are unfit for surgical intervention or transplant.

For many such patients who are unfit for open-heart surgery or do not respond to medication, the MyClip TEER System offers new hope.

Developed by Meril Life Sciences, the MyClip TEER System enables precise closure of the mitral valve flaps, thus preventing the backward flow of blood into the lungs. The entire procedure typically takes about an hour, and most patients get discharged within 3 5 days.

Until recently, this treatment was only available through costly imported devices. The introduction of MyClip under the Make in India initiative is a big jump towards accessible cardiac care in India.

This case's success emphasizes the Make in India initiative power and government support to render cost-effective treatments of world-class quality to Indian patients.
