The benefits of Anulom Vilom or alternate nostril breathing are well-known, but I had never tried it out for myself. Frankly, I thought it was too tiresome and I was a little sceptical towards its supposed benefits. But a health crisis I faced a few months ago made me change my mind about it and I decided to give anulom-vilom a fighting chance. And today, I stand a reformed woman who has finally acknowledged the powers of this ancient breathing technique.
Two months ago, I was terribly stressed and my health had nosedived. The worst thing was that my own body was resisting any attempts at relaxation. Even on a weekend, I found it impossible to stop thinking about work and just live for the moment. I was also plagued by constant aches and pains. Almost every weekend, I was down with migraine.
I started growing concerned about my well-being and sought help from a colleague who was well-versed in yoga. On her recommendation, I started doing Anulom-Vilom and Ujjayi Pranayama twice every day for ten days, once before going to bed and on waking up. Slowly, my initial scepticism was replaced with enthusiasm and I stuck to the routine for as long as my health issues got resolved. Here are some of the changes I saw.
1 Restful sleep
I no longer tossed and turned in bed and sleep came pretty easily. The quality of sleep improved and I felt refreshed on waking up.
2 Clearer skin
All my life I struggled with bad skin, which was prone to breakouts. Although my skin didn't clear out completely, I noticed that there were fewer pimples on my face than before.
3 Improved appetite
Within days of starting Anulom-Vilom, all the stress eating disappeared along with the craving for salty, sweet carb-dense food. My hunger could be satiated with fruits and healthy home-cooked food.
4 Reduced aches and pains

5 No more migraines

Within days, I could see an improvement in my otherwise crabby mood. I was upbeat, happy and no longer snapping at friends and family.
