A new study published in the JAMA Psychiatry has revealed that lead exposure in childhood may negatively affect mental health and personality in adulthood. The study participants with high lead exposure were more neurotic, less agreeable and conscientious than the less-exposed participants. The research also found that if a person has a high level of lead in his blood at age 11, then he is more likely to show symptoms of mental illness and difficult personality traits by the age of 38. However, apart from this environmental factor, there can be a host of other triggers behind mental health issuesand they include genetics, brain injury, prenatal damage, poor nutrition, life situations, so on and so forth.
