The only three things you need to nail a headstand strength, balance and elimination of fear. You will not be able to hold yourself properly in a headstand if you lack upper body strength. Try these yoga poses recommended by yoga expert Sunaina Rekhi to boost your upper body strength while improving your sense of balance.

Kumbhakasana or upward facing dog

  • From adho mukha svanasana or downward facing dog, shift your shoulders over your wrists such that your body is parallel to the floor. Press down with your hands to push the ground away.
  • Draw your navel up and engage your lower belly. Hold the pose for thirty seconds or up for a minute.

The Plank

Staff pose or chaturanga dandasana

  • From kumbhakasana, lower yourself to chaturanga dandasana.
  • To perform it, move forward on your toes and lower down with your arms. Make a 90-degree angle with your arms.
  • Keep your ribs and abdominals pulled in just like you would in plank pose. Keep your spine erect. Make sure that you don t drop your shoulders down and they point straight forward.
  • If you feel unstable, you can lower your knees. From here come back to plank pose or upward facing dog. Repeat it ten times.

Chaturanga dandasana 2

Dolphin pose or makarasana

  • Come on your hands and knees and place your forearms on the mat.
  • Then bring your hands together interlocking your fingers.
  • Push your body up into downward facing dog position.
  • Repeat the steps 10 to 20 times.

Dolphin pose

Dolphin plank pose or makara adho mukha svanasana

  • Assume the plank position or kumbhakasana
  • Now while exhaling, bend your arms at the elbows
  • Lower your buttocks so that they are parallel to the floor, and your entire body is in one straight line.
  • Make sure your head is not tilting downwards or upwards and is in line with your spine.

Elbow plank

These poses will increase the strength in your arms and shoulders and help you to get into inverted yoga poses. Challenging inversions such as headstand take time so allow your body time to eliminate fear and build the strength. Do not rush. Here's how you can do a headstand correctly.
