Ancient yogis believed food to be the creator of life force that sustains our bodies and keeps us in good health. Therefore, it is very essential for us to make the right food choice for healthy living. Yogis classified food into three types based on the effects they have on our body satva, rajas and tamas.
They believed that tamsic food can bring out lethargy where as rajsic food can make us restless. On the other hand, satvik food can make you feel light, enthusiastic and energetic. It is the one that is pure, clean and wholesome, and promotes intelligence, strength and courage. Gita Ramesh, Joint Managing Director of Kairali Ayurvedic Group and author of The Ayurvedic Cookbook says, 'It not only meets your physical requirements of protein, carbohydrates and fats but also nourishes your body and mind.'
Significance of a satvik diet
According to Gita, the significance of a satvik diet is that it s light in nature, easy to digest, mildly cooling, refreshing and not disturbing to the mind. It is rich in prana (purity), so promotes positive thoughts, happiness and satisfaction. She says,'This kind of diet can leave us calm, alert and refreshed.' It is different from other kinds of food as it is savoury, smooth and pleasant to the stomach unlike rajasic diet that is excessively pungent, sour and salty, and tamasic diet that is stale and tasteless.
Traditional satvik food
Gita says, 'Traditional satvik food is quite simple and grown organically on rich fertile soil. Foods are of attractive appearance and are harvested at the correct time of year.' Satvik diet encourages foods that are grown and ripened naturally. It avoids any kind of food that involves killing or harming animals. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts are satvic and are believed to clean the mind and body leading to optimal physical and mental health. Cooked food that is consumed within 3-4 hours of cooking is considered satvik.
Health benefits of satvik diet are immense. According to Ayurveda, this is the best diet for physical strength, good mind, good health and longevity. It also eliminates fatigue and enhances peace and tranquillity. This kind of food is easily digested and can strengthen the stomach, intestine, liver and pancreas. If you are susceptible to diseases such as high BP and diabetes then adopting a satvic diet can be the best option for you. Besides, satvik food can improve the health of your skin and quality of your hair.
Tips to keep in mind:
Gita suggests pure satvik food needs to be chewed carefully and eaten in modest portions.
Do not overeat satvik foods as they become tamsic and lead to diseases in the body.
Also, do not overcook or over-spice satvik foods as they then turn into rajsic foods and lead to bodily restlessness.
