I am a 38-year old woman and whenever I try deep breathing, I feel giddy. Is it normal?
It is not unusual to feel light headed if you are new to deep breathing. Many people also experience numbness in the nose or the area between the eyes. Deepak Sharma, senior meditation teacher, Art Of Living tells you why.
These side effects, that you may suffer while deep breathing, is because you are breathing out the carbon dioxide from your body faster than your body produces it. Low levels of carbon dioxide cause the blood vessels to constrict and constricted blood vessels carry less oxygen and blood to different parts of the body, which may make you feel dizzy. You may also feel lightheaded while you chant because you alter the oxygen intake, that makes you feel uncomfortable.
However, remember that deep breathing has a host of benefits for your health so don't quit. When you start with deep breathing, you may feel light-headed, but you will find that it passes with time. Try to continue breathing deeply till the time you don't feel light headed. Just try not to breathe very deeply or intensely when you start with the process. At any point in time, if you feel lightheaded, make sure that your inhalation is as long as your exhalation. You can also cover one nose with your hand and slowly breathe out through the other nose. Here are some common yoga mistakes beginners must avoid.
