When you are stressed all you need is a comforting hug or a pack of comfort food. While the former can help you relax and relieves stress by lowering the emotional burden, the latter can make you put on weight and lead to weight gain in the long run. But did you know that long terms stress can lead to weight gain over time? The researchers from University College London (UCL) found that the higher the level of cortisol (ie. the more stressed someone was), the bigger the body weight, BMI and waist circumference of the person. The study was done on 2,527 men and women over the age of 50. Not just this, high levels of cortisol were linked to persistent obesity.

How to deal with it?

Stress is a part of your lifestyle and it is not possible to eliminate it completely from your life. However, you can find ways to deal with it on an everyday basis. This might mean indulging in a hobby that involves burning calories like dancing, swimming or gardening.
