Like every year, you might have the new year resolution to stay fit, lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle. This year, don t make resolutions. Write your intentions and give a deadline. That way you might be able to work harder on those goals.

If you have woken up on the first day of the year and suddenly quit eating out, began exercising, woken up very early, taken the stairs at work and did all the wonderful things that are recommended for weight loss and staying fit, you might have observed that it is too much work. This is basically what puts off most people after a week. Your resolutions go down the drain because staying fit and losing weight seem like too much effort and you start believing that you are not cut for it.

So here s an easy solution. Sleeping till late in the morning, eating paranthas or white bread and fried things for breakfast or snacking in the evening with street-side food are all habits you ve developed over the years. Your mind and body are surely going to fight this change. Change one habit at a time. Here s how:

  • Give up on your evening snack from outside and fried foods to begin with.
  • After about two days, wake up early and switch from your milky sweet masala chai to something simple like ginger tea.
  • Experiment with healthy tasty breakfast recipes. The transition from paranthas to healthy pancakes or dosas will be easy.
  • Next week onwards, start going for a brisk walk early morning and practice some yoga in the evening. You can try office yoga too till you can make time for exercise in the evening.
  • Plan your schedule in the second week and dedicate at least 20 minutes in the morning and an hour during the day for exercise. Here s why exercising in the morning is the best.
  • Enroll with a gym or some aerobic or fitness classes from the third week onwards because your body will now be ready to be physically active. You can follow these expert tips for first timers at the gym.
