You are gaining weight without even knowing it because you don't bother reading food labels. Here's why it's so important.

For most of us, grocery shopping is just another chore that has to be done every month. We make a list of all the food items we need and just pick up the phone and order it from a local grocery store or use an app to get done with this tedious task.

If you have to get grocery items immediately, either you run down to the supermarket or ask a family member to pick up everything from food grains to evening snacks like biscuits. However, these habits are the main reason why you re struggling to lose weight despite being so health conscious .

If you have been on a low-fat diet and have been buying things that claim to be fat or sugar free, it is time you opened your eyes. Minal Asurlekar, a Clinical Dietitian at Hinduja Hospital says, We conducted a small survey that included 20 people in Mumbai who were on a weight loss plan and on interviewing them we were surprised to find out that not a single one of them bothered reading food labels.

Whenever you buy a product that claims to be rich in fibre and free of refined flour and sugar, you will be shocked to see that most of these products have hidden sources of these fattening food items, she adds. Here s how you are being fooled by food labels.

If you do all your food shopping online, read the ingredients in the details section or Google them if it s not available on the website. Look at the serving size of food items and also how many calories each packaged food contains. Don t ignore the % value section and remember that low fat means it should not contain more than 3g of fat.

If the food product says it is sodium free, the amount of sodium should not be more than 5g. Here s all that you need to know about reading food labels right. Once you make it a habit to read what your food is made of you will know what to invest in and what food products to completely avoid. This way, you will get better results from your weight loss plan and consume lesser calories.
