A little flashback. Growing up, I was always lean. Throughout school and college, I was a 'thin' girl, who by default was looked upon as being weak, frail, unhealthy. The number of times my mom was advised to 'feed me better' and 'consult a nutritionist' is not even funny. Not to mention that I had serious body complexes and never felt confident about anything I wore or how I looked. Fast-forward 15 years and a baby later, not I am subjected to body-shaming because I have gained weight at the most stubborn place -- around my belly. But unlike the young me, I do not let the criticism get to me. But it doesn't mean that every time somebody comments on my paunch, it doesn't pinch. And we are all subjected to such mean comments, more than often by women, which is ridiculous! Why not each of us make a decision today, to not say mean and body-shaming things to other women. Let's start by refraining from statements like:

  • This dress would have looked much better had you weighed 5 kilos less.
  • You are so thin, you practically have no boobs.
  • Look at her wearing that dress! Doesn't she take a look in the mirror before leaving the house.
  • Sleeveless with such loose/ bulgy arms. Seriously!
  • Doesn't your mom feed you? Poor baby, come I'll give you something to eat.
  • You can afford to eat whatever you feel like, it's not like you will gain weight or anything!

We had a Facebook live discussion on what all people go through when they are fat-shamed and thin-shamed. This shaming starts right with babies and continues throughout life. No matter what your size, people will always have something mean to say. So repeat after me -- haters gonna hate! Do not let other people's opinion rain on your parade. The only way to feel good in your skin is to feel confident, just the way you are.
