Soon after lunch, people experience afternoon slump. Citrus fruits or dark chocolates can help you in being more productive at work.
Chips from the vending machine or cookies your co-worker baked are not what your brain needs. Huffingtonpost.com suggests a list of food items to keep you alert:
- Dark chocolate: When you eat dark chocolate, compounds in cocoa called flavanols produce a surge in blood flow to the brain. That helps you feel awake and alert. Eating chocolate also stimulates endorphin production which gives an immense sense of pleasure. Additionally, it has theobromine can which is a stimulant that does not affect the Central Nervous System to a great extent. (Read: Dark chocolate keeps heart disease and other health problems away!)
- Fruits: Just sniffing them can stimulate alertness. Eat an orange, and you also benefit from vitamin C. Fruits like apple are rich in Vitamin C too. Think of your body as a machine, and eating these foods will act as fuel to make it perform better. (Read: 10 health benefits of apples)
- Water: Just about every system in the body suffers when we're dehydrated, including the brain. It helps to wash out all the toxins of the body: Water is the most soluble liquid, therefore it has a very important activity in the body; to flush out excess toxins. So, keep a reusable bottle or cup on your desk to remind you to drink. (Read: Water is the fuel that keeps your body fit)
- Coffee or tea: Caffeine works by stimulating the central nervous system but may act as a mild antidepressant by increasing production of certain 'feel good' neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline. So, make sure to drink a cup of coffee to stimulate alertness at work. (Read: Health benefits of coffee to help justify your addiction!)
