Advanced utkatasana or the Buddhist stupa pose is an excellent pose to lose weight from your lower back and thighs. It is also one of the best asanas that help improve your posture and make you more flexible. The pose also helps strengthen the muscles of your lower back, hips, and chest. If you have a desk job and sit for long, your legs tend to stiffen. This pose will open up your hips while strengthening and toning your legs. The asana will also help in the smooth functioning of the digestive system and beat constipation.

Steps to perform:

  • Stand straight by placing your feet together. Then place your legs hip width apart.
  • Now move your toes outwards. As you take a deep breath in, squat down till your thighs are almost parallel to the floor.
  • Keep your back straight and maintain the axis of your backbone from your tailbone to the crown of your head.
  • Bring your hands to your chest and join your palms.
  • Maintain balance in this position for 10-15 seconds while breathing slowly. Ensure that you are observing your breath.
  • As you exhale, slowly come up and relax.

Word of caution

  • Avoid this asana if you have any knee or back injury.
  • Do not get into the pose if you suffer from bouts of frequent headaches or insomnia.
  • Also do not try to perform the pose if you are pregnant.
