When it comes to breakfast options in India, upma is a ubiquitous dish. Not only is it delicious but it is also easy to make and highly nutritious. While there are different variations of the humble upma, this one made of your breakfast cereal recommended by Chef Ranveer Brar , Consulting Chef with Kelloggs India will please your taste buds.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups crushed breakfast cereals made with whole wheat
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 dry red chili
  • 2 tbsp split garam dal
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 1/4 tsp finely chopped, green chilies
  • 1/4 cup small cubes, Carrots
  • 1/4 cup French beans
  • 1 medium chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup corn kernels
  • 1/2 lime juice
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander leaves

  • Heat oil in a heavy bottomed kadhai. Crackle some mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilli, and split gram dal.
  • Now saute some onions until light brown. Add vegetables and keep stirring for 2 minutes on low flame. Add hot water and salt.
  • Add the crushed breakfast cereal made with whole wheat and keep stirring with another hand continuously.
  • Stir fry upma 2-3 minutes till dry. Turn off the fire and add lime juice and garnish with fresh chopped coriander leaves.
  • Serve immediately. Also, try this healthy oats upma.

  • Before you head to your nearest grocery store to buy cereal, it is important to know how to pick the healthiest option available locally. As you are aware, most commercial cereals have very high sugar content and artificial colours and flavouring which might prove to be counter-productive for you.
  • Carefully read the ingredients and nutrition facts label. Go for whole wheat or whole grain cereal that has a minimum of 5 grams of fibre per serving and not more than 5 grams of sugar. The sodium content should be lower than 240 mg per serving and completely avoid cereals that claim to have real fruits like strawberries or mangos in it. They are nothing but artificial flavouring. Eat pulses with cereals for more proteins.
