If you have nailed ardha chandrasana or the half moon pose, it is time to try ardha chandra chapasana or the sugarcane pose. According to yoga expert Pragya Bhatt, this balancing yoga pose will tone and stretch your hips, hamstrings, thighs and buttocks while working on the muscles of your lower back and lengthening your spine. What s more, you will lose the fat on your lower back, hips, buttocks and thighs in no time. It also tones your abdominal muscles and improves your balance, focus, flexibility and co-ordination. Also try ustrasana or the camel pose to reap all these benefits.
As you get into the half moon pose, keep your left hand firmly planted on the floor and keep your right leg lifted in the air for a few breaths. Relax in this position as you focus on your breath.
As you inhale, bend your right leg inwards and bring it towards your chest. As you exhale, bring your right hand behind to reach your right foot. You should hold the top of your right foot with your right hand.
Once you get a firm grip, and you are comfortable in the pose, try to pull your right feet inwards towards your body. Doing this will deepen the posture and give your quadriceps a deeper stretch. Remember to flex your leg only so much so that it does not hurt your knee. Keeping your gaze steady will help you balance better in the pose.
Hold for 5-6 slow deep breaths before releasing back to the half moon pose. Slowly bring your foot back to the floor and perform it on the other side.
Tips:
You can place a block under your right hand for better stability and more accessibility.
You can also hook a strap from your lifted legs to your arms if you find it difficult to reach your foot.
Contraindication:
Do not perform this pose if you have a lower back, ankle or a knee injury.
Also, avoid getting into the asana if you are pregnant or menstruating.
