Tadasana or the palm tree pose is the foundation pose of most standing yoga asanas. It is a simple pose that is excellent to improve your posture. It gives a good stretch to your arms, chest, abdomen, spine and legs, helping you tone your entire body. When practised regularly, this asana can contribute to reducing back pain. It is also an excellent pose to calm and clear your mind. The gentle stretch in the abdomen in this pose can benefit you if you are in your early stages of pregnancy.

You can perform tadasana any time of the day. Steps to follow:

  • Stand firm on a yoga mat and keep your legs and feet joined. Place your hands by the sides of your body and look straight.
  • Take a deep breath in and raise your hands above your head. Stretch your shoulders, chest and arms upwards.
  • Now raise your heels such that the weight of your body is borne by your toes. Stretch your body upwards.
  • Retain the position for 10-15 seconds and slowly lower your body while breathing out.
  • Close your eyes while performing this asana.

Word of caution:

  • Do not try to get into this pose if you have insomnia, headache and low blood pressure.
  • Also do not perform this asana when you feel lightheaded or dizzy.
