steam roomOne of the things that we see in most gyms is a steam room a place where people go after a workout to relax and rejuvenate their muscles. But, are there any disadvantages to taking a steam bath? Or is it really necessary?

What exactly happens in the steam room? Is it necessary? How does it help?

A steam room produces wet or moist heat at around 115 to 120 degree Fahrenheit. This heat helps to open up your pores and cleanse your skin, remove toxins, relax your muscles, increase your body's metabolism, relieve coughing and throat congestion among other benefits. All of this makes a steam session a great way to recover after a strenuous workout. It also helps in some way to get rid of the extra water weight in your body. When should you take steam? When should you avoid it?

Ideally, steam baths should be taken after a workout session. You should avoid going there at all costs if you have a communicable disease, since you may transfer the bacteria present in you to other people. Also, some people face problems like dizziness, extreme thirst, rapid heartbeat, etc. If you suffer from diabetes or heart disease you should talk to your doctor before using the steam room. Children and pregnant women should also avoid it.

Some basic tips before entering the steam room

  • Stay hydrated. Bring a bottle of cold water along.
  • Take a shower before and after entering a steam room.
  • Do not stay in the room for more than 15 minutes. Stay longer and you will end up dehydrated.
  • Bring a towel along to wipe off the sweat.
  • Avoid wearing any metal jewellery.
  • Keep your face and head covered with a towel since those areas may be sensitive to the extreme heat.

Verdict: Nothing relaxes the muscles like a good steam session after a particularly strenuous workout but consult a doctor if you've any health issues and follow the guidelines properly. Here's how steam benefits your skin and hair.
