But it s not just the sweat and bacteria on your feet but also your shoes that contribute to the odour. In fact, shoes eventually absorb all the foul odour and are the main cause of the stench. Getting the odour out of the shoes is more important. Here are some tried and tested remedies for getting rid of bad odour from your shoes:
Try not to wear the same shoes every day. Invest in at least 2 pairs of shoes that you can wear alternately. This way, your shoes get some time to dry up and thus remain odour-free.
Insert medicated insoles in your shoes. The deodorising effect of these insoles will keep your feet and shoes smelling fresh all day.
Stuff your shoes with some newspaper or paper balls when you remove them in the evening and place them in a ventilated area. The newspaper will absorb all the internal moisture and wetness and thus prevent bacteria from breeding in.
Dust some baking soda in the shoes and leave it overnight. Baking soda is often used as an anti-fungal powder. It is an economical and effective trick.
Place fresh citrus peels like that of orange, sweet lime or lemon overnight in the shoes. This masks the bad odour from your shoes and keeps them smelling fresh the next day.
Put 1-2 drops of lavender oil in your shoes. The oil also has antibacterial properties and will keep your shoes smelling fresh.
Dust some antifungal powder or spray antifungal spray in your shoes. The powder will keep the shoes dry and free from fungus formation.
If your shoes are extremely wet during monsoons, you can use a hair dryer to dry them partially and leave them overnight under a fan for complete drying.
