Skimmed milk, toned milk, double toned milk the choices are endless! But with all the nutrition labels and fat-free logos you are more likely end up with nothing but a bag a processed food that is anything but healthy. Well-known nutritionist Dr Swapnali Banerjee tells you why switching to low-fat dairy products may not be an amazing idea.
Whole milk is not high in fat
You may have opted out of whole milk because of its high fat content. But full fat cow s milk contains only 3.7 percent fat and anything above 20 percent are considered high fat. So unless you drink gallons of whole milk, switching to skimmed milk will not make any difference.
Skimmed milk has a low nutritional value
Skimmed milk is devoid of nutritional value. The vitamins A, D E & K, are fat soluble which means they require fat to be absorbed by your body. A cup of milk, on the other hand, can provide you with an impressive 5 percent of your daily recommended intake of vitamins. It is also a good source of riboflavin, and one cup of it can make up to 20 percent of your daily requirement.
Skimmed milk is processed
Skimmed milk is highly processed and can leave you feeling unsatisfied, leading to cravings. Whole milk is an excellent source of protein containing all the nine amino acids leaving you feels full and satisfied. The saturated fat that is removed from whole milk has blood sugar stabilising properties. Including only low-fat foods in your diet can make you crave sugar and then show on your waistline! Skimmed milk contains added sugar
You were wrong if you thought skimmed milk does not include sugar. A lot of sweeteners is added to skimmed milk to make up for the fat that is removed. Find out the number of calories in different types of milk.
