Many of us prefer practising yoga at home thanks to the numerous online yoga tutorials. But I being an advanced level yogi, still find it extremely effective to attend a yoga class with a group. I recently had an amazing yoga class at The Yoga House, Mumbai and in my opinion, a yoga class is the best place to practice yoga. Here s why:
1. Better focus: Unfortunately, focus is something that can easily lack in your home yoga practice. When you wake up in the morning, roll out your yoga mat and get into a downward facing dog the only thing you notice is that your nail needs some trimming. You may then start to think about your nails and lose your focus. You will have fewer distractions and more dedicated if you join a yoga class. Here are yoga tips for beginners.
2. Motivation: Practising yoga with others may motivate you to do more. For example, when you lose balance when you are in tree pose, and you see that the person standing next to you is still holding on, you will automatically strive harder to hold the pose for longer.
3. Learning: Whether, it is before, during or after the class; you can always talk to a yoga teacher and clear your doubts. You can also talk about your injury and pain in specific parts so that your instructor can add possible solutions to your practice and also make adjustments accordingly. You will not know what the right method is if you blindly follow the online yoga channels.
4. Alignment and posture: Unless you have a wall full of mirrors it can be difficult for you to tell if your alignment and posture is correct. In a yoga class, the yoga teacher will not only scan your moves and see where you are lacking, but the verbal instructions make you more aware of the posture alignment. Here's how you can choose a yoga class.
5. Guidance: When you abruptly move from one yoga asana to the other at home, it can be difficult for you to get into the right position and also hold the yoga pose for long. The instructor will guide you to move from one asana to another in such a way that every asana you perform will seem easy and comfortable. For example, you need to be performing a couple of stretches before you get into sirsasana or the headstand.
