Your mother must have always told you that paya soup is extremely healthy. And is likely that whenever you consumed the paya soup, you felt much better. Have you ever wondered why? It is because the bone broth has several benefits for your health. If you have never tried it, here nutritionist Priya Kathpal gives you all the reasons for trying it out.

  1. If you are suffering from digestive disorders like gas and constipation, the gelatin in bone broth can help heal the mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract and thus aid in the digestion of nutrients.
  2. The bone broth contains a high quantity of the minerals, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, fluoride, sodium and potassium that can all help support the health of your bones. Here’s why having soup is a healthy idea. 
  3. Bone broth is a rich source of hyaluronic acid and collagen that can contribute to improving the appearance of skin and strengthen the nail and hair. Collagen is also an essential compound found in tendons, bones, muscles and ligaments.
  4. A study published in the journal Chest found that consuming bone broth during a respiratory infection helps reduce the number of white blood cells that cause the flu and cold symptoms [1].
  5. It is also incredibly rich in anti-inflammatory amino acids proline and glycine that can help fight inflammation. The amino acid glycine found in bone broth is also very calming and can help promote sleep.

To prepare the mutton paya soup you will need:

  • 4 mutton legs
  • 1 tablespoon whole coriander
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 5-6 garlic cloves
  • 2 green chillies
  • 10 black peppers
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 4-5 cups water
  • Salt to taste

Preparation

  • Marinate the mutton legs with onion, garlic, black pepper, cumin seeds, coriander, salt, chillies and oil.
  • Then add the water and cook it in a pressure cooker for 5-6 whistles.
  • Wait till it cools down, add a little salt and cook it again for 2-3 whistles.
  • Serve hot with pepper. You may also want to try this quick and easy chicken soup.
