Trail mixes are an excellent source of energy. It is a mixture of nuts, dry fruits and few other additives likes chocolate and fruit seeds. It is an ideal snack to have when hiking, trekking or travelling long distance as a handful of the mix is enough to give you a boost of energy.
The GAIA Sport Trail Mix has just hit the market and here's my review based on a sample provided by the brand.
Ingredients
The GAIA trail mix contains almonds, cashew nuts, peanuts, melon seeds, watermelon seeds, green raisins, black raisins, dried papaya fruit, dried pineapple fruit, salt, preservative (E211) and antioxidant (E303). Read about the health benefits of different dried fruits.
Taste
All the ingredients, especially the nuts are crunchy and did not have a rancid taste. The raisins also tasted fresh and the seeds were toasty. However, the biggest drawback is the dried papaya and pineapple fruit. The little chunks of dried fruits were chewy and felt synthetic as though made from some resin. The flavour too was synthetic and I couldn't tell the pineapple from the papaya. All in all, it's a good combination of sweet and salty and one flavour does not overpower the other.
Nutrition
30g or a handful of the mix contains proteins - 4.19g, total fat- 4.19g, carbohydrates - 17.83 g, sugar-7.50g, cholesterol - 0g, iron - 1.27mg, dietary fibre - 2.55g and can give you an energy of 126 kcal. Read about 10 Indian snacks with less than 150 calories.

Shelf life

The verdict
I received the packet at around 4 pm, which is my tea time and I was hungry by then. I ate two handfuls of the mix and felt full for a very long time. But I didn't really feel good after eating it. It did not make me sick per se, but I felt uneasy for a while and the reason for it maybe the quantity of the mix I ate. The recommended intake is 30 gms, or a handful. My friends who tried a handful of the mix did not feel queasy at all. So if eaten in the right quantity, the trail mix is safe.
To sum up, the trail mix is tasty and the packaging is convenient. At 160 Rs for 100g, it could do a lot better. The only disappointment was the dried papaya and pineapple chunks. They might as well do away with it.
Should you buy it or not?
It's worth giving a try!
