All those hours when you spend your time hunched over a computer can give a forward head posture with your shoulders drooping down. A bad posture can make you extremely unhealthy. If you think you slouch, it only takes a little work to straighten up and improve your posture. By walking straight or sitting up straight you not just hold your belly in but also utilise the muscles of your core, back and butt to maintain a good posture. What s more, a good posture makes you appear leaner.

A correct posture is one where you keep your ears in line with your shoulders. You should pull your stomach in and push your shoulder back. Dumbbell side bend is a strength training move that will help you maintain your posture, says fitness expert Roshni Shah.

Steps to perform

Stand keeping your back straight and your feet shoulder-width apart. Relax your shoulders holding dumbbells in both your hands. Slowly bend towards one side at your waist, hold the bent position for 2-3 seconds and return to the starting position. Then bend at your waist on the other side. Do three sets of 15 repetitions of this on both sides. Alternatively, you can also perform all the repetitions on one side and then move to the other.

Benefits

This exercise will work on your obliques and lower back muscles allowing you to hold your body upright. It will also improve your balance and enable you to move your body with greater control. Also, perform this yoga pose to improve your posture.

Tips

If you are a beginner, you may want to start with less weight and then graduate to moderate weighing dumbbells. Do not use heavy weights for this exercise as it can hurt your spine.
