You must have tried the basic yoga poses like the downward facing dog pose or adho mukho svanasana and chaturanga, but if you want to try something new, give this yoga pose a try. Dvpada dhanurasana or the bridge pose on elbows is a great back bending yoga pose to tone and strengthen your arms, abdomen, hips, buttocks and legs and can give you that toned look in no time.

Yoga expert Sunaina Rekhi, tells us about the other benefits of this yoga pose:

  • It opens up your chest and lungs and helps relieve respiratory diseases like asthma.
  • The asana stimulates the thyroid and pituitary glands, boosts energy and counteracts depression.
  • It is also therapeutic for back pain and osteoporosis.
  • When you perform this asana, the blood flows to the abdominal area and strengthens and rejuvenates your reproductive organs.

  • As you inhale, bend your arms and place your arms next to your ears.
  • Exhale and straighten your arms and lift your hips, shoulders and head from the floor.
  • Inhale again and bend your arms and place the crown of your head on the yoga mat.
  • Keep your forearms on the mat and clutch your head with your heads.
  • Hold for 8-10 seconds while you take deep, consecutive breaths. Doing this, will open up your chest.

Word of caution:

  • Avoid this asana if you have any elbow or wrist injury.
  • Also, do not get into the pose if you are menstruating or are pregnant.
