Parivrtta Janu Shirsasana or revolved head to knee pose is a chest-opening pose for intermediate yoga practitioners. It is intense but if you have practiced the Janu Shirsasana before, it is not very difficult to move to this pose. Yoga expert Mahua Deb,trainer, Defence Welfare Association and at Vishakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) tells you how to perform this asana correctly and its benefits:

Steps for Parivrtta Janu Shirsasana

  • From badhakonasana, stretch out the left leg while keeping the right leg bent and feet touching the inner thigh.
  • Exhale and lean to the left with the shoulder touching the inner side of the knee, elbow on the ground and palm touching the heel of the left feet.
  • Reach the right arm above the head to touch the toes of the left feet.
  • The right elbow should be pointing towards the ceiling and once comfortable turn the head towards the ceiling while testing the torso on the left thigh, back of the head touching the left knee.
  • Hold the pose for about 30 seconds to a minute and while releasing, twist the torso to face towards the ground and bring it till midway towards right and lift.
  • Repeat on the other side.

Benefits

  • It stretches the shoulder muscles, hamstrings, and spine. You can also try these poses to loosen up tight hamstrings.
  • Helps in stimulating abdominal organs, liver, and kidneys.
  • Improves the functioning of kidneys, liver, and abdominal organs.
  • Improves digestion and helps in elimination of waste by stretching the ascending and descending colon. Enhances breathing by releasing the tension from intercostal and diaphragmatic muscles.

Avoid this pose when suffering from diarrhoea. Do not round your spine as it may cause discomfort in back and hamstrings.
