Here s a gentle yoga pose that will open up your hips and challenge your balance. Padangustasana or the toe stand is an excellent asana to stretch your inner thighs, hips and the back of your knees. The asana is also very beneficial to strengthen your back muscles. It regulates the reproductive system and also assists in the smooth running of the digestive system, says yoga expert Sneha Arora.

Steps to perform

  • Sit comfortably in sukhasana or the easy pose.
  • Bend your left leg such that you place your left foot near your left buttock. Then bend your right foot and place it near your left foot.
  • Slowly shift all your weight forward on your toes and place your hands by the sides of your body for support. Remember to keep your back straight.
  • Slowly lift your left foot and place it on your right thigh. Remember that your right thigh should be parallel to the ground.
  • Your entire body weight is now on your toes and the ball of your right foot. Do not move your body too much while trying to balance.
  • Once you balance yourself in the position, join your palms in front of your chest and take a few deep consecutive breaths. Do not hold your breath while you are in the position.
  • To release, slowly get your hands by the sides of your body and gently lower your left leg.
  • Repeat the steps with your other leg.

Tip

  • If you are new to yoga, performing utkatasana or chair pose as a preparatory pose can help you get into the toe stand easily.

Word of caution

  • Avoid getting into the pose if you have an ankle injury.
