So try it for dinner today. Here s the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tur dal (split pigeon pea)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2-3 tbsp gram flour
  • tsp turmeric
  • 1 pinch asafetida
  • 1 tsp ginger chilli paste
  • 1 tbsp. peanuts
  • 1 tbsp oil/ghee
  • tsp mustard seeds
  • tsp cumin seeds
  • 4 curry leaves
  • 3-4 kokum petals
  • 1 tsp jaggery, grated
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves, finely chopped.

Method:

  1. Take one cup of arhar dal in a pressure cooker. Add water, tsp turmeric powder and salt. Pressure cook it for 2-3 whistles till the dal is completely cooked.
  2. While the dal cooks, take 1 cup whole wheat flour in a bowl. Add 2-3 tbsp gram flour, tsp turmeric powder, tsp red chilli powder, 1 tsp ginger chilli paste and salt to taste. Knead a dough for rotis by adding sufficient water. Keep the dough aside.
  3. Roast the peanuts and remove the skin. Keep aside.
  4. In a small pan, add the oil. Once the oil is hot, add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, and turmeric powder. Once ready, pour the tempering over the cooked and mashed dal.
  5. Place the dal pot on a low flame for boiling. Add 1 glass of water, 3-4 kokum pieces and grated jiggery.
  6. Make rotis of the dough prepared and cut them in diagonal pieces. Put them in the boiling dal and cook on a low flame till the roti pieces are cooked well. The dal will thicken and you can add water to adjust the consistency and to avoid the roti pieces form sticking at the bottom.
  7. Garnish with coriander and finely chopped onions and serve immediately.

Tips

  1. You can also use ghee for tempering instead of oil for better taste.
  2. The peanuts and kokum if added while boiling the dal render a better taste to the recipe.
