Neeraj Chopra made history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in athletics at Olympic Games when he clinched the first position at Tokyo 2020 with a throw of 87.58 metres in the javelin competition. Chopra has also become only the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. Chopra now holds gold medals in the javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and now the Olympics, all at the same time.
Born in Haryana's Khandra village, near Panipat, Neeraj Chopra was brought up in a joint family and he was the elder most child. Perks of being the youngest child in a family include being pampered with lots of foods in India, and Neeraj was no different. In an interview, a close relative of Neeraj Chopra has said that at the age of 11, Neeraj was chubby and he weighed around 80kgs. Worried about his weight, Neeraj's father had taken him to the Shivaji stadium to join some sports that can help him get fitter. It was only when Neeraj Chopra saw a few men throwing the javelin, that he decided to try the sport. He then slowly developed his interest in the field and he realized that he was good at it. But, these sports need training, who trained Chopra? When Neeraj Chopra went to the Sports Authority of India centre in Panipat, he met javelin thrower Jaiveer who trained him in the sport. Chopra's first javelin throw without any training was close to 40m and this impressed Jaiveer. This is when Neeraj Chopra began his javelin journey and the rest is history.
